April 2009 - New Digital Rights Agency to deal with online copyright issues
The Government has asked those working in the creative industries in the UK to give their opinions on the role a digital rights agency might play in protecting and promoting the legal use of online copyright content. This is also inviting comment on how the industry, consumer groups and central government can work together to create an environment which rewards investment in creativity.
The organisations involved include creators, commercial rights-holders and consumer groups. All parties have been asked to respond to the document by the 30th March. Whether anti-piracy laws which are planned come into force will depend largely on the new Digital Agency and whether it can reduce unlawful peer-to-peer file sharing. It will also produce a code of practice designed around enforcement.
All institutions and companies involved in copyright compliance will be affected by the plans.
