March 2009 - Many employees may steal confidential information if faced with redundancy
A report from the IT security group CyberArk has discovered that 58% of workers in the UK would steal confidential information from their employing company if they were to lose their job. It was also revealed in the report that 40% of the British workforce are already collecting confidential data to help them negotiate any plans for future redundancy.
The information that is most likely to be stolen are things like customer databases, business proposals and product information. Between 2006 and 2008, the number of court cases brought against employees who have subsequently used illegally-taken private data in their new job has increased sevenfold. Employers should take all necessary steps to protect their confidential data.
